Drives

A drive is missing or wrong

A drive didn't show up

  • Open Backmiles. If something is blocking detection, the Drives screen says so and offers a Fix button.
  • Check location is set to Always (iPhone) or Allow all the time (Android), with precise location on.
  • Very short drives (under about half a mile) aren't logged.
  • Add a missed drive by hand with the + button; distance is worked out from the route.
  • If Google Maps Timeline was on, you can also import that day (see Import past drives).

A drive is wrong

  • Split in two (a stop for fuel or coffee): select both in History and tap Join.
  • Wrong place name: open the drive and edit the place; Smart places use the new name from then on.
  • Sorted wrong by Smart: tap the Smart badge to see why, change it, and choose whether to update the rule.
  • Not a drive at all (a bus or a ride): delete it. Deleted drives can be restored for 30 days.

Battery

Keep detection running

Backmiles uses motion sensors to notice when you start driving and turns GPS on only while you drive. Battery savers can still pause it. These settings keep every drive logged.

iPhone

  1. 1Settings → Backmiles → Location → Always, and Precise Location on.
  2. 2Settings → Backmiles → Motion & Fitness on.
  3. 3Settings → Backmiles → Background App Refresh on.
  4. 4Low Power Mode can delay detection; drives may start late while it's on.
  5. 5Don't swipe Backmiles away in the app switcher. iOS restarts it for drives, but it's slower.

Android

  1. 1Settings → Apps → Backmiles → Permissions → Location → Allow all the time, precise on.
  2. 2Permissions → Physical activity → Allow.
  3. 3Apps → Backmiles → Battery → Unrestricted (or “Don't optimise”).
  4. 4Samsung: Battery → Background usage limits → add Backmiles to Never sleeping apps. Xiaomi, Huawei, OnePlus and others have similar switches; dontkillmyapp.com lists them per brand.
  5. 5Battery Saver mode can pause background apps. Backmiles shows a notice when it does.

Past drives

Import past drives from Google Maps Timeline

If Google Maps Timeline was on, your phone kept a record of your drives. Export it and Backmiles rebuilds them, on your phone. The file is never uploaded. Free plan: see what was found and what it's worth. Pro: save and sort the drives.

Android

  1. 1On your phone, go to Settings → Location → Location services → Timeline.
  2. 2Tap Export Timeline data and save the file. It's called Timeline.json.
  3. 3In Backmiles, open Catch up on past drives and tap Choose file, or share the file straight to Backmiles.

iPhone

  1. 1In Google Maps, tap your picture, then Your Timeline.
  2. 2Tap ⋯ at the top, then Location and privacy settings → Export Timeline data.
  3. 3Save it to Files, then in Backmiles tap Choose file.
  • Timeline now lives on your phone, and many phones keep about 90 days by default. Older drives need an export you saved earlier.
  • Older Google Takeout files work too (Records.json and the monthly Semantic Location History files, or the zip), as do GPX files.
  • Apple's Significant Locations can't be exported, so there's nothing to import from it.
  • Drives you already logged are skipped, so importing twice won't double count. Buses, trains, taxis and flights are skipped too.
  • Google's help: Manage your Google Maps Timeline.

Some US states require employers to tell employees about location tracking. Backmiles shows drivers exactly what the owner can see, before they join and any time in Settings, but employers are responsible for their own notices.

  • Deleting the app or your account doesn't cancel the subscription. Cancel in the store too.
  • After cancelling you keep Pro until the end of the paid period. Your drives and reports stay.
  • Bought Pro on one phone and switched platforms? Tell us; subscriptions belong to the store you bought from.

Disagreements

When a driver and an employer disagree

1. Look at the drive's history

Every drive keeps a log of who sorted or changed it, and when, including Smart's decisions and their reasons. Most disagreements are settled by reading it together.

2. Talk it through

Whether a drive is business is a question for you, your employer and your tax adviser, not for us. Owners can re-sort business drives; drivers can see every change and add notes explaining a drive.

3. Ask us to check the record

If a record looks technically wrong (a missing change, a drive that shouldn't exist), email support@backmiles.com from the account's email. We can confirm what the system recorded. We don't take sides on classification and won't share one person's private data with another.

Correcting data: you can edit your own drives in the app. To correct something you can't edit (an account detail, a drive locked by a removed team), email privacy@backmiles.com and tell us what's wrong; we reply within 30 days, usually much sooner.

Your data

Export, correct or delete your data

Export

In the app: Settings → Account → Export my data. You get your drives, places and settings as files.

Delete

In the app: Settings → Account → Delete account. If you own a business, this deletes the business and its drives too. Cancel your store subscription separately.
